Sustainability: A firm commitment for the environment and for business

Climate change is one of the most urgent sustainability challenges that people, governments and companies are facing.

Responsible use of energy is one of many actions that companies should be taking. Indena has always been oriented and committed to reducing fossil fuel consumption and use, saving energy, achieving high levels of energy self-production and implementing the use of renewable energy. That’s why Indena is equipping all its European sites with state-of-the-art photovoltaic panels: considering the actual equipment and the upcoming projects, the Indena Group will be equipped with over 4 megawatts of photovoltaic systems with a total estimated producibility of 4,000,000 kilowatt-hours per year.

All of Indena’s European factories are ISO 14001 Environmental Management System and ISO 45001 Occupational Health and Safety Management System certified.

All the actions taken supporting sustainability also enable Indena to be fully reliable in terms of business continuity. More specifically, Indena has commited to adapting their production system to EU policies regarding the fight against climate change.

The first goals of its commitment, and of the related investments, are the achievement of greater energy efficiency in the execution of business activities. This includes an efficient use of resources and a fundamental change in the overall production process allowing for greater energy or resource efficiency.

The program includes the following implementations:

  • For energy efficiency: -2°C high-efficiency chiller, efficient nitrogen production system and high-efficiency heat pumps.

  • For heat and water efficiency: 7-12°C high-efficiency chiller.

  • For renewable energy: an additional 1.5-megawatt solar photovoltaic power plant.

Indena pays attention to the goals of business continuity, including working on risk mitigation, the development of a dedicated plan, the capability to resume operations in a timely manner, and the protection of critical assets (including data, personnel, and technology infrastructure), making it a reliable partner for all its clients.

For its many efforts, Indena has been awarded the ECOVADIS certification, achieving the Bronze Medal. ECOVADIS recognizes the company's commitment to managing ESG (environmental, social and governance) risk and compliance, achieving corporate sustainability goals, and driving large-scale impact by fostering improved sustainability performance for the company and its value chain.

K Patel Phyto Extractions in Mumbai, India, has identified a region in India where they are practicing contract farming on 1,000 acres of land, directly benefitting 500 farmers. In this project, K Patel provides seeds for growing ashwagandha and encourages farmers to follow good practices with zero contamination and no pesticides. Once the crops are harvested, K Patel will purchase the entire yield from all farmers at a fair price, ensuring mutual benefit. Additionally, the company is setting up processing facilities to manage post-harvest handling and ensure quality.

This project represents a commitment to sustainability by supporting farmers and promoting environmentally friendly practices. K Patel is also in the process of identifying other regions across India to expand this model to other herbs suited to local geographic growing conditions.
