January 18, 2021
Food and beverage brands, with their sustainable packaging materials, can lead the CPG industry out of the tidal wave of plastic the world faces. By 2050, plastic in the oceans will outweigh fish, predicted a report from the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, in partnership with the World Economic Forum. We are in a race to drastically reduce the amount of plastic that is put into landfills, and this large-scale solution can only be found by working collaboratively on a large scale.
The healthy food and beverage industry has taken the call, shed its competitive secrets and joined together in search of truly sustainable packaging.
Specifically, brands that offer flexible film packaging for their natural and organic foods joined forces in 2020 with the goal of reducing ocean plastics. In this Healthy Insider podcast Reyna Bryan, president, RCD Packaging Innovation, talks about the Redefining Flexible Films Innovation Workshop that she led, including the big packaging lessons learned and the next steps industry will embark on to further sustainable packaging solutions.
In this podcast with Sandy Almendarez, content director, Bryan, discusses:
Using nature as a design guide for creating packaging that is safe for the consumer and improves the soil when its composted.
The policy work that is required to support a move away from a plastic packaging-centric economy.
A model of collaboration innovation that could be repeated in other industries during a pandemic or in “normal” times.
